Company spokeswoman Renee Zahery said the job losses would be spread geographically but will mainly hit employees based in Chicago, Madison in Wisconsin, Tarrytown in New York, the New Jersey site in East Hanover as well as the Canadian operation in Toronto.

The giant foodmaker is in the process of trying to slash US$1 billion from its overheads over the next three years.

Kraft had to “be cost-conscious day in and day out,” said Ms Zahery and had turned to job losses  as “a last resort”. Workers affected by the move will be told on Friday.
