28 Oct - Major retailers in Southern China have pulled eggs from their stores over fears of melamine contamination.
Retailers in the city of Guangzhou started recalling eggs that had been produced in north eastern China after the discovery of melamine tainted eggs in Hong Kong last weekend, local sources revealed.
French retailer Carrefour and domestic companies such as Huarun Wanjia and Baijia took the decision to pull the Kekeda brand of eggs produced by Hanwei Group – one of the largest egg companies in China.
Reports from Hong Kong also linked Hanwei eggs with those contaminated by melamine. Authorities there immediately ordered that testing begin for melamine in pork, offal and farmed fish.
Hanwei Group has so far declined to comment on the matter.
The discovery of the industrial chemical, which has so far sickened at least 100,000 people in China, has heightened fears that melamine has entered the food chain.
